Growing up, my dad instilled in me the mantra: “If it’s still useful, you don’t throw it away.” That means that if you get something new, you probably should keep the old thing as well “just in case.” That just in case might be because your new thing breaks, or because your friend just happens to need it – but if it’s “still good” then discarding it is totally out of the question.
It’s not the worst policy. While admittedly my dad and subsequently I have a ton more stuff piled up around us than we need, I also learned at an early age how to trade in things like old books and video games to get new ones. Something that’s gotten a ton easier thanks to the internet.
While most people probably know you can sell your old stuff places like Craigslist or Gazelle, what you might not realize is Amazon will also take a lot of that stuff and give you gift cards in exchange.
The site isn’t interested in your old clothes, but it will take your old electronics and books. Trade-in categories on the site include Kindles, cell phones, tablets, Bluetooth speakers, video games, and textbooks.
Much like other trade-in programs, to use it you tell the site a little bit about the product and its condition (even if it’s broken) and then they’ll provide a shipping label for you to send it their way. Once they get it, you get an Amazon gift card equal to the appraised value of your device. If you’re trading in something like a bluetooth speaker, you also get a little bonus money if you want to replace it with an Amazon device.
If you’re trying to replace an old Amazon product then it’s one of the best deals around. If you’re looking to trade in a smartphone or something else, then your mileage may vary. You’ll typically get the most money from selling to someone directly, although you’ll have to meet that person for the transaction, which if it’s someone from Craigslist might get a bit… sketchy. Depending on the video game or book you’re trying to get rid of, you might be better off hitting up a local video game or bookstore.
All that said, if you’re sitting on some older stuff and just want to make a little cash getting it out of your house, it could be a pretty solid option to consider.
